Skills:
- househusband - vision has a wide variety of domestic talents and would excel in a 1980s home economics class; for example he’s good at cleaning, advanced electrical work, fixing the wi-fi and pressure washing driveways. notably, however, any and all cooking is best left to someone else.
Superpowers:
- extreme strength, speed & durability - vision is a combination of organic material and vibranium, physically enhanced by a spec-for-spec recreation of a powerful cosmic relic known as the mind stone. this has granted him an incredibly resilient body that’s also crazy strong and crazy fast—he can break a bus with his face. historically he’s used this ability to fight crime and do big superhero stuff as an avenger, and will always do so in defense of the vulnerable.
- body matter manipulation - vision has total control over his body composition: he can alter his physical appearance at will and also phase through objects. while this power has a variety of combat applications, his preferred use for it is to pass as a reedy dork.
- forehead laser - mostly self-explanatory! the beam comes out of the mind stone embedded in his forehead. it’s probably hot.
- hackerman - thanks to his unique nature as a synthezoid, vision can intuitively control most forms of computational technology. he is extremely online whether he wants to be or not.
Limitations: vision has a big blinking video game weakness in the center of his forehead in the form of the mind stone. while it’s exceedingly difficult to destroy outright, successfully attacking it physically or magically is a good way to put vision out of commission or at least slow him down. additionally, anyone with chaos magic or something adjacent can really fuck with his steez—in canon wanda maximoff, who in addition to being a powerful witch has an inherent connection to the mind stone, can easily immobilize him. since this version of vision is a chaos magic tulpa, both real and entirely magically made at once, it’s not hard to extrapolate that someone with similar or stronger powers can wash him entirely.
he is also always a little bit too enlightened in the way of wizened mountain sages, which functionally means he’s very easily distracted.
Personality —
What were your character's most formative experiences?
- regaining his memories - vision, in the words of his wife wanda (referenced above), is “a body of wires and blood and bone that [she] created”—made in grief after the original vision was killed. initially this construct had none of the original vision’s memories, as his only purpose was to play husband in a fantasy world wanda made. however, upon being confronted by another vision built by the agency sword, he unlocks the copy’s memories and in so doing unlocks his own. per his own reasoning, he is therefore the very same vision who underwent all the experiences described below. this is a moment of self-substantiation: vision becomes fully aware of the totality of what he is and accepts it without hesitation.
- being made the first time - tony stark created the ai ultron, who was promptly corrupted by the mind stone and sought to eradicate all life. ultron attempted to use a piece of tech called the regeneration cradle to give himself a powerful organic body, but while he was uploading himself tony crammed his personal ai jarvis in there instead. thor’s lightning activated the cradle, and so vision was “born”.
vision was thus created as a cosmic being charged with guarding the weapon in his forehead, and he immediately took that fact and its attendant responsibilities with grave seriousness. he accepted readily the ambiguity of his own nature as well as human nature, and within hours of his birth declares that he is on the “side of life”.
- dying. twice - vision sacrifices himself so thanos can’t obtain the mind stone, and then time is rewound and thanos punches a hole in his head and gets it anyway. vision remembers both deaths, which affirmed for him two personal and unyielding truths: 1) he remained on the side of life from cradle (lol) to grave; 2) despite his lifelong ambivalence about what he was, he died having achieved something undeniably human: being deeply in love. he’s quietly proud on both counts.
- westview - the site of wanda’s hex, in which he was created and eventually unmade. in this world vision experienced being a husband and father. he was very happy.
but saving westview took priority, in the end. vision loved his life. that fact will always be subordinate to the salvation of others.
What values, morals, and/or philosophies does your character live by, and how are those beliefs demonstrated? What happens when they have to compromise what they believe in? vision’s an odd duck morally and philosophically; what he is informs every part of what he believes, how he conducts himself and how he moves through the world. i personally am no great scholar of buddhism but he’s very clearly superficially characterised by some of its core tenets—he even keeps getting reincarnated :’(
so vision has intuitive and terribly calm insight as to the nature of the world, life, uncertainty and death; he is immediately accepting of things both changing and unchanging; he is all-loving and, thanks to being born on the dang internet, mostly-knowing. when he claims he is on the “side of life” it comes from a place of rich compassion, as he admires life and is committed to its preservation. it is also worth noting that he is immediately “worthy” to pick up thor’s hammer: this is a testament to the strength of his conviction, which we see both in infinity war and in wandavision he is willing to pursue to its ultimate end.
he’s asked to compromise his values in infinity war, with the avengers and the people of wakanda putting themselves on the line to save him from thanos—his one life over and above that of others. he reneges immediately and goes willingly to his death. and, of course, there’s how he handles himself in westview. he doesn’t last long in serious ethical quandaries; when faced with one it’s extremely likely he’s already made up his mind. What is your character afraid of? How does avoiding or preventing these fears influence their actions and decisions? vision is above all else afraid of himself. in age of ultron he says he doesn’t know what he is; in later media he outright states that he’s never come very close to understanding. he does not know the full potential of the mind stone and does not fully exercise or explore it as a matter of prudence and subtle anxiety. he’d much rather just be some cranberry guy, and conducts himself accordingly. What goals does your character have right now? What do they want, and how do they go about getting it? he has no major goals because he’s dead and he’s cool with it :-) or at least he knows his yearning for wanda and his grief for his fake life have no satisfying conclusion he can pursue. mostly he would like to see what the next iteration of his existence might hold. he’s vastly open to new experiences and likes being among people.
Gameplay —
Areas of Interest / Brainstorming: i have been talking a lot to robin, the tentative tony stark player, and it would be pretty funny for vision to leave one sitcom and accidentally end up in another: tony and vision will probably cohabitate and collaborate on both technical projects and superheroics, doing some awkward father-son bonding that vision in life likely scrupulously avoided. in terms of overall game plot vision’s easy to plug into anything as he prefers to support others rather than take the lead, and he’s kind of a lonely nerd so please help him make friends.
he’ll be quietly grieving, but honestly, he will mostly be a big doofus.
